Feeding hungry minds and bodies®
can happen anywhere and Children's Hunger Alliance's Afterschool Nutrition & Education team takes up the challenge of providing nutrition and enrichment activities to children in afterschool programs.

Children’s Hunger Alliance works with schools to feed as many children as possible during the school day. However, we must also ensure children receive food, nutrition and healthy activities after school. That’s why we work with faith-based and youth-serving organizations that operate afterschool programs.

In working with others to ensure children (ages K-12) have access to food, nutrition, fitness and a safe environment after school, we:

  • Raise awareness of childhood hunger and its impact on child development, health and learning.
  • Increase usage of federal programs that offer reimbursement for providing nutritious meals and snacks to children.
  • Help ensure the highest number of kids participate in afterschool programs.
  • Offer nutrition education and fitness curricula, taught by AmericCorps members, to increase program participation and teach children healthy behaviors.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to ensure afterschool meal programs operate efficiently and effectively.

By empowering faith-based and youth-serving organizations to feed local children with federal resources, everyone wins:

  • Children end the day with a hot meal, getting the nutrition they need to learn and thrive.
  • Federal funds feed local children while strengthening local economies.
  • Afterschool programs stay operable longer and serve more kids.
  • Parents stretch food dollars further, because children get no- or low-cost access to afterschool meals and snacks.
  • Children are less likely to be involved in unhealthy activities because they have a safe place to go after school.
  • Ohioans win because healthy children are more likely to grow into healthy, productive adults.

Afterschool programs across Ohio benefit from the USDA afterschool meal and snack reimbursement program. Our Afterschool Nutrition & Education team manages the reimbursements to afterschool sites for meals and snacks served to children. In Franklin County, the Afterschool Nutrition & Education team sponsors many of the afterschool meal programs in the area.

In addition to feeding hungry bodies, Afterschool Nutrition & Education is also feeding hungry minds by providing innovative and exciting programming to improve literacy, nutrition education, and physical fitness. Some of our enrichment opportunities include:

Youth who participate in our Afterschool Nutrition & Education enrichment programs:

  • are more likely to have diets that meet the recommended daily allowance for all key nutrients;
  • arrive at school on time, attend school more regularly, and are more likely to pass on to the next grade than their peers; and,
  • are more likely to pass the 4th and 6th grade proficiency tests than their peers.
