Family Child-Care Literacy Education and School Readiness
|
Getting kids started on the right foot is essential for success in school. Feeding hungry minds
and bodies®, our philosophy for breaking the cycle of childhood
hunger in Ohio and our Family Child-Care Literacy Education & School Readiness program is an integral part
of our fight. Furnishing Family Child-Care providers with materials and training that allows them to develop literacy and school readiness skills
in the children they care for nourishes the mind and prepares kids for success.
JPMorgan Chase recognized the importance of Feeding hungry minds and bodies in Ohio. To help Children's
Hunger Alliance with their fight to break the cycle of childhood hunger in Ohio, the two organizations teamed up
to develop a pilot project that would couple school readiness activities in Family Child-Care settings with nutritional
and food choice education. Named CARES (Children Are Ready for Education and Success), the goal of this
pilot was to prepare children for success in school and to teach them strategies for being healthy. The success
of the pilot project has lead to the expansion of the program statewide.
Today, Children's Hunger Alliance's Nutrition Specialists perform regular visits to the homes of
Family Child-Care providers. During these home visits, the Nutrition Specialist provides technical assistance and training. The training now includes
the knowledge transfer and skill development of the Family Child-Care provider so they can teach literary skills
to the children in their care. The materials Chase provides to the child-care provider for the literacy education and school readiness follow the themes of nutrition, good food choices and healthy living.
Literacy and school readiness programs strive to prepare all children to meet the standards
set forth by the Ohio Department of Education. Our program works with the Family Child-Care providers to develop
their knowledge and skills so they can provide age-appropriate activities to develop knowledge, skills, disposition
and feelings in order to offer children the best care possible.
