Feeding hungry minds and bodies
is a multi-facted task. Explore the many programs of Children's Hunger Alliance.
|
The School
& Summer Nutrition team, together with the Public
Policy team, works at a grassroots level to engage local communities, schools, community-based organizations,
faith-based groups and volunteer organizations to expand food resources for families. This is key to Feeding
hungry minds and bodies.
Children's Hunger Alliance, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Safety, Health
and Nutrition, promotes use of the USDA safety net to feed hungry kids and to generate economic growth in local
communities. Programs include:
School
Breakfast: the School & Summer Nutrition team assists schools that do not have School Breakfast Programs
find the appropriate strategy for implementing the program, as well as assisting other schools to maximize participation;
School
Lunch: as with the School Breakfast Program, the School & Summer Nutrition team works to ensure all Ohio
students who qualify for reduced or free lunches have them available.
Afterschool
Meals and Snacks: the School & Summer Nutrition team supports the development of new afterschool programs
and assists the Afterschool Nutrition & Education team in finding new sites where children can find balanced,
nutritious meals and snacks afterschool; and,
Summer
Food Service Program: the School & Summer Nutrition team recruits and provides assistance to setup new
sites for the Summer Food Service Program, and they are responsible for the promotion of the sites to increase
participation.
In addition
to feeding hungry bodies, the Afterschool Nutrition & Education team is also feeding hungry minds by providing
innovative and exciting programming to improve literacy, nutrition education and physical fitness. Some of our
enrichment opportunities include:
Healthy
Kids, Healthy Communities: The AmeriCorps members facilitate and teach nutrition education to low-income children
in afterschool, classroom and summer food sites.
Afterschool
Meal Program: This program is designed to provide balanced and nutritious meals to children 5-18 years of age
at no cost to the afterschool site or child. We are currently serving over 1000 youth per day in Franklin County.
CATCH:
It stands for Coordinated Approach To Child Health, and is a nationally recognized
physical fitness curriculum which encourages all children to participate in noncompetitive physical fitness activities.
Cook
with a Book: A wonderful way of blending the Feeding of hungry minds and bodies® is the
Cook with a Book program, which is taught by AmeriCorps
members and community volunteers.
Special
Events: The Afterschool Nutrition & Education team works with its AmeriCorps
volunteers, partnering agencies and corporate sponsors to create opportunities for children to expand their horizons,
like our holiday skating party or summer field days.
The Early Childhood
Nutrition & Education team makes sure quality child care is available for all of Ohio's children. To meet this
goal, this team assists individuals in setting up Family Child Care (FCC) home-based businesses that strive to
support our mission.
Early
Childhood Nutrition: including accessing Money for Food for
Family Child Care Providers
Early
Childhood Education: Focusing on the needs of children from birth to six years of age, the Early Childhood
Education unit works with Family Child Care providers to ensure the quantity and quality of child care for all
Ohio families.
Family
Child Care: The team can provide support and education for Family Child Care providers in the areas of Professional
standards, Preliteracy and School Readiness, Certification
and through the Multicultural Initiative.
Child
Development Associate Credentialing: Part of ensuring parents of the quality of the child care provided in
a Family Child Care business is through certification and credentialing.
