Summary of Policy Recommendations
Implementation
of the following policy recommendations will help make Ohio a state where no child goes to bed hungry.
Fight Hunger through Increased Access to Food
Policymakers should support Children’s Hunger Alliance’s efforts to provide all children with access to nutritious
meals through continued state funding and collaborative partnerships.
Ohio policymakers should work with the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Job and Family
Services to improve the “direct certification” process so that all eligible children receive free school meals.
Policymakers should require all publicly funded child care providers -- both Type II and Parent Provider Inspected
-- to offer a USDA snack and meal program.
Ohio policymakers should work to increase the number of low-income working families who receive food stamps
by providing three months of transitional benefits, updating application process/procedures and easing recertification
requirements.
Ensure Ohio’s Children are Well Fed and Healthy
Policymakers, communities and educators should provide children from preschool years through graduation with
access to nutritious food, opportunities to be physically active and education to support healthy eating and fitness.
Government should assure that an infrastructure is in place to support access to nutritious food and physical
activity.
