Southside Columbus Food & Fitness

To effectively address childhood obesity requires a systems change approach involving schools, communities, homes and healthcare providers to implement new programs while working together. This approach is being implemented in the South Side of Columbus. The goals for this initiative are to improve access to healthy foods, improve opportunities for physical activity and reduce chronic disease related to obesity. Examples of the kind of projects in the South Side are:

  • A new Farmer’s Market that sells local produce and accepts Food Stamps, Senior Coupons, WIC and cash
  • School gardens and nutrition education
  • Food pantries that teach families how to select healthy options via a Choice Pantry Model
  • Programs for parents of pre-schoolers to learn how to be active as a family
  • Community fitness programs through Columbus Recreation and Park locations

Children’s Hunger Alliance is facilitating this work. It is the partnership of schools, community organizations and residents that make these programs a success.
