To effectively address childhood obesity requires a systems change approach involving schools, communities, homes and healthcare providers to implement new programs while working together. This approach is being implemented in the South Side of Columbus. The goals for this initiative are to improve access to healthy foods, improve opportunities for physical activity and reduce chronic disease related to obesity. Examples of the kind of projects in the South Side are:
A new Farmer’s Market that sells local produce and accepts Food Stamps, Senior Coupons, WIC and cash Children’s Hunger Alliance is facilitating this work. It is the partnership of schools, community organizations and residents that make these programs a success.
