Summer Food Service Community Engagement Program
|
While many children receive
meals during the school year, very few in Ohio receive the nutritious meals needed to continue their growth and
development during the summer months. Unfortunately, hunger doesn't take a summer vacation, so we can't take a
vacation from Feeding hungry minds and bodies®.
Children's Hunger Alliance works with schools, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and governmental
agencies to expand use of the USDA Summer Food Service
Program (SFSP). Our work focuses on:
- engaging community-based groups to act as sponsors or sites for the Summer Food Service Program;
- encouraging schools to provide meals for children during summer intervention programs;
- promoting the summer meals to parents and children via mailers, billboards, bus promotions, and media events;
and,
- encouraging programming at the sites to increase participation and help children continue learning
in the summer months.
- assisting families in locating nearby sites through our system
Why are our efforts to expand the availablility of the Summer Food Service Program across Ohio
so important?
Over 400,000 children in Ohio are hungry or at risk of hunger. The Summer Food Service programs are only reaching less
than 13% of these children. Here are the statistics:
