AmeriCorps
Feeding
hungry minds and bodies®
on a daily basis takes manpower (and woman power)! In addition
to the Afterschool Nutrition & Education team,

AmeriCorps for Healthy Kids training includes
learning and playing the educational and physical activities
that they use at the afterschool programs. |
Children's
Hunger Alliance's afterschool enrichment programming is supported
by volunteers from the AmeriCorps
program. These volunteers are known as AmeriCorps for Healthy Kids.
The
AmeriCorps for Healthy Kids members facilitate and teach nutrition
education to low-income children in afterschool, classroom
and summer food sites. These volunteers commit to one year
of service and receive a living allowance. Upon completion
of their term of service, they will also receive and educational
award from the Corporation
of National Service. The nutrition curriculum consists
of 12 hands-on nutrition lessons that teach children how to
prepare healthy snacks emphasizing the importance of
eating fruits and vegetables. The AmeriCorps for Healthy Kids members also help with
Little Chefs, CATCH,
Bright Futures, Earth
Friends, and Cook
with a Book.
General member qualifications include:
- desire to serve low-income populations;
- ability to serve independently and
in a team;
- good organizational skills;
- excellent communication skills; and,
- ability to be flexible and adopt to
change.

LAST
BALLOON WINS!! Different strategies provided differing
results as the AmeriCorps for Healthy Kids practice a variety of physical
and educational activities that they may use at their
afterschool sites. |

Interested in applying for an AmeriCorps
or AmeriCorps*VISTA position? Visit the AmeriCorps
web site and follow these directions:
One the left-hand side, the screen gives
you the option to either "Find a Program," which
will allow you to browse all of the programs available in
the US, or "apply now." The first will allow the
user to only view the descriptions of the 2 programs, not
apply. The second will allow the user to apply to the AmeriCorps
web site, and in the processof applying, select the program(s)
that you want to apply for (and view the descriptions there).
To just "find a program":
Select under 1. Service area, "children/youth" and
under 2. State, select "Ohio" and hit search. This
will bring up the listings matching these criteria. They can
then view the AmeriCorps position for Childrens Hunger
Alliance under "Childrens Hunger Alliance."
If you want to apply, you will need to go back to the "apply
now" section.
To "apply now":
The screen will take you through the steps to apply. You will
eventually be asked to select the program(s) that you want
to apply for. When they do this, an e-mail will be sent to
Childrens Hunger Alliance to notify us that you applied
for the program. We will contact you at this point.
