Special Events

There is more to Feeding hungry minds and bodies® than providing nutrition meals and educational activities. There is providing children the opportunities to be inspired and participate in activities they may not otherwise experience. Afterschool Nutrition & Education, working with its AmeriCorps volunteers, partnering agencies and corporate sponsors, strives to create opportunities for children to expand their horizons. A few of these special events are:

  • Afterschol Holiday Party:
Each December, children in Afterschool Nutrition & Education programs are invited to a terrific destination for a holiday party. The festivities are held in the evening so the children (and adults) can enjoy holiday activities. With Children's Hunger Alliance staff and the many corporate volunteers, the children receive quality, adult interaction and participate in holiday themed activities such as decorating holiday cookies, face painting, and crafts. After a hot meal and a visit from Santa Claus, each child also receives a gift for the holiday season.

  • Ely Chapman Overnight Trip:
Each summer, youth from Franklin County are invited to the Ely Chapman Education Foundation for two days of fun and education. Our youth, many for the first time, experience a boat ride on the Muskingum and Ohio Rivers while learning about wildlife and fresh water conservation and about the effects of erosion on farmlands and the river basin. The children also visit a Marietta home that was part of the Underground Railroad, learning about the history of Marietta, it's role during the days of slavery, and about life on the river.

  • Spring Field Days:
Annual event held each spring to recognize the work afterschool programs perform in our community. Children from afterschool sites from around Central Ohio who participate in the USDA meal program are brought together to meet and interact with youth from other programs from the Columbus area.

  • Multicultural Festival:
Martin Luther King Day presents the perfect opportunity for the children in Afterschool Nutrition & Education sponsored afterschool programs to be exposed to food and culture from foreign lands. Food, clothing and other artifacts representing populations on the seven populated continents entertain and inspire children of all ages.
